Rockd: Explore and Learn About Your Geologic Surroundings
Rockd is an educational app developed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Shared Apps. It allows users to explore and learn about their geologic surroundings, making it suitable for both professional geoscientists and anyone curious about the rocks and their stories.
With Rockd, users have instant access to geologic and geographic summaries of their current location through a Dashboard. The app also provides interactive global access to over 290 geologic maps, with new ones added on a weekly basis. Users can explore the landscape using a dynamic, 3D virtual globe and save maps for offline use with the built-in map caching system.
One of the standout features of Rockd is the ability to add your own field observations, even offline. You can tag features from Macrostrat and the Paleobiology Database, record strike/dip or trend/plunge using your phone's compass, and track your progress through the geologic record privately or share it with others.
Rockd is a comprehensive tool for geologic exploration, backed by the Macrostrat lab in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. It is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Geoscience. For any issues, users can contact the developers at for assistance.
